About the session

Another fabulous gig at Magy’s Farm. Alex the leader, but amazing contributions from the other players. We were excited to welcome back Freddie Jensen on bass. Such a player, such a team member, such a joy to have around. There are some musicians like that you know, they bring a certain energy that makes everything work. They smile at the right time, they play solidly, they create connections with the musicians and Maggie and I and are as thoughtful as they are present. Freddie is such a man. A joy to be with, a welcome friend who ensures compatibility and positivity – a joy to have here. Well he definitely played a huge part in the success of the gig. The other musicians, simply brilliant. Will Barry, flat out touring and recording with so many of the UK’s leading jazz outfits, known for his harmonic brilliance and dynamic contributions, and Ananda on drums who in many ways was the star of the show...a friendly and somewhat unassuming giant who was all over the kit all night, expansive rhythms, complex counter-times, visibly engaging behind the kit as she dominated it like a praying mantis...so captivating to watch and a mighty musical presence on the night. The man though was the leader, the composer, the enigmatic but authorative saxophonist Alex Hitchcock...so respected by the UK scene, so sought after as an ensemble player, so commanding as a leader and comfortable in the role. The music had many nuances and his compositional contribution provided the scope for the creativity which all engaged in. Another spectacular performance. Thank you all...
