About the session

I must admit, I was really looking forward to this one for a long time. In my past, I had guested with CEO Experiment and knew the lads Leo, Cote and Peter. I knew what amazing musicians they were, and how different their music would be for our regulars, based very much on where they were from...Venezuela, Granada and Hungary...Latin-American grooves and rhythms, odd-meter times and high energy repetition of ideas that progress into highly technical high-energy playing that hits the 10 more often than not. Joining them was a very special saxophonist Carlos Ligero, from Cadiz, himself steeped in the history and the culture of the music that the band was playing. To be honest, he slotted in like a glove and I am excited that the band has decided to make him a full member as they evolve their new sax-led sound. The music they played was original, something that we have learned to look forward to as it often brings the unexpected and the co-ownership of the music by the musicians seems to make the energy and commitment even greater...they are generating a performance of music that has come from within, not just something they have been exposed to. Everyone is hearing it for the first time, freely imbibing in the creation of the music as our ears are open and our hearts are willing...a community experience we all share together in a unique setting that encourages partnership, equality and hope. Cote was blistering on drums, but also charming as the man who spoke between the tunes to explain the music and the motives for its creation. He was funny, respectful and informative at the same time and definitely brought a welcomed translation to help us all connect in the moment. Peter was technically brilliant, solid, holding down grooves that freed the other musicians up, and Leopoldo, well, what an utter beast on the piano. What an energy. Technically amazing, one could say on fire as he brought the music to ‘boiling’ on so many occasions, then dropping the volume down to introduce a new line that would cement the music for the rest of the band. Carlos was extraordinary, delivering the most complex melodies so accurately and then matching the energy of the narrative of the tunes as both a leader and a team member. This was one of our favourite ever gigs, and proudest. Amazing ambassadors for our music and four of the nicest guys we have had here. Truly humbled.
