About the session
Lauren Bush is a Canadian vocalist who has been living in UK for some time now. I first met her in Canada when I was studying with her trumpet-playing Dad in Banff in 1992. She came over here 7 years ago with Greg and I put a couple of Big Bands on to play Gregs arrangements, and Lauren sang. Since then she has put out several significant albums and it was only a matter of time before we would get her back here to do the Farm. She asked me to put a rhythm section around her and I was delighted to oblige with Scott Flanigan piano, Rohan Armstrong bass and Steve Davis drums, three guys I have played with for many years now and who had their homework done in advance. Steve was extraordinary. What a musician, so high-energy low-volume, a musical idea generator, ears always turned on. Rohan is starting to get a huge sound on bass and his soloing is strong but melodic. Scott is Scott…sooo good! He is so experienced now with a renowned command of his instrument, harmonically-driven improvisations and solid musical environment securely anchored for the vocalist all night. Very proud of you lads! Lauren was magnificent, great with the punters, warm and endearing. Her voice is so cultured and she has developed this gorgeous twist of vibrato at the end of some of her phrases that is instantly recognisable. She is technically advanced with little bits of vocalese as well as scat solos, and a crafted approach to the melodies which sounded contemporary and fresh.
