Sometimes the term 'genius' is bandied about too freely, but not on this occasion. One of the most impressive performances we have witnessed here at the Farm, happened when American bassist and Head of Whirlwind Recordings, Michael Janisch, brought his technically inexhaustible quintet to play a ferocious set that left us all gasping for breath, and confirming to each other what we had just witnessed.
Such was the ferocity of the individual playing, the complexity of the writing and many moments of magic that displayed the musical delivery of some of the best musicians on the European scene, one could be forgiven for missing the fact that the music came first, each musician fulfilled their role within a team, and a carefully crafted show took place that represented the combined skills in a magical way.
Our dear friend and regular visitor, sax player Paul Booth, was joined on the front row by highly regarded UK saxophonist Graeme Blevins, playing fiery solos and hardcore unison and harmonised lines. Bassist Janisch was as always impeccable, a rich bass sound and expansive playing style, and the incredible impact of pianist Rick Simpson and drummer Jamie Murray will always be felt by those who witnessed this extraordinary performance. We are so proud to be able to facilitate this level of musicianship and share it with our friends, who responded with a 5-minute standing ovation…
